2010 NASA Academy Application Now Available

The online application for the 2010 NASA Academy is now available. At the site, students may apply to the NASA Academy at Glenn, as well the Academy programs at other NASA centers, with a single application.

The application deadline as of this posting is January 18, 2010 at 5:00 pm EST. Please refer to the Application website for more details.

Offers to selected students will take place in March 2010.

Academy concludes with presentations and graduation

The 2009 Glenn Academy program concluded this week. On Tuesday, a poster session gave the interns a chance to present their individual work to the many mentors who came and asked questions. On Thursday, the group gave their final presentation on their group project, BLAST’EM. They were presented with their Academy pins and formally welcomed into the NASA Academy Alumni Association. Finally, the group attended a banquet dinner for the students and faculty at the 100th Bomber group restaurant. Congratulations to all the 2009 Academy interns!

Academy visits Plum Brook Station

On Monday of week 9, the Glenn interns visited Plum Brook station and two of its main testing facilities, the Space Power Facility and the Spacecraft Propulsion Research Facility. The group had evening presentations from Vince Bilardo on the Ares 1-X and Natacha Chough, an Ames Academy Alum, about Space Medicine. The group also heard from Kathy Schubert about the Crew Exploration Vehicle, and worked hard on their individual and group projects in order to be ready for next week’s presentations.

Apollo 40th Anniversary and Week 8

Monday of week 8 was the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon, and the group attended a panel at lunch of engineers who had been at Glenn during the Apollo days. Several academyites attended the career fair at the Ohio Aerospace Institute, which was part of a conference held there. On Wednesday, the group heard from Prof. Iwan Alexander of Case Western Reserve University about alternative energy technologies in an evening lecture. Over the weekend, the group enjoyed a visit from Tom, MaryBeth, and Mehran, ‘08 GRC alums, a visit to the beach, and to the Cleveland Orchestra.

Graduate Forum and Angela Harrivel Talks

Tuesday of week 7 had two talks, the Graduate Forum and an evening speaker presentation from Angela Harrivel. The graduate forum talk gave the interns a better idea of what to expect from the application process, how to obtain funding, and gave advice about how to find an advisor. Angela Harrivel spoke to the group about her work in studying pilots’ brain activities while operating planes using imaging technology called fNIRS.

Family and Alumni Weekend

The Academy had Family and Alumni weekend at Glenn this weekend. The parents and families arrived on Friday evening, and had dinner at Dr. Kankam’s house. On Saturday, the families visited the Glenn Visitor’s Center and learned about the research areas at GRC, and then enjoyed a barbeque at the Rocky River Metropark with alums Omar (Goddard), Kyle and Kamara (Glenn 07). The Academyites and some friends and siblings enjoyed an exciting day at Cedar Point Amusement Park on Sunday.

Midterm presentations and Sheila Bailey presentation

Week 6 of the Academy was full of preparation for individual midterm presentations, which were held on Thursday. Dr. Kankam and the mentors of the project attended the presentations. On Friday, Sheila Bailey presented to all of the interns about her work on solar cells, and then spoke over lunch with the Academy about her career path and many varied experiences.

Glenn Academy visits Goddard Academy in DC

The Glenn 2009 Academy spent the Fourth of July holiday weekend in Washington D.C. with the 2009 Academy, Robotics Academy, and Lunar and Planetary Sciences Academy. The group learned to salsa dance, explored the monuments on the National Mall, and enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display.

Glenn interns take tours of GRC

During week 5 of the Academy, the Glenn interns took tours of the SLOPE lab facility and the Hangar, as well as hearing a talk from Matt Melis on the Columbia Accident Investigation Board, and enjoyed a Student-Faculty Picnic on the GRC grounds. Additionally, the academy students had an evening lecture from Academy Alum Omar Mireles, spoke with Dr. Joe Shaw of the Business Development and Partnership office to present their work so far on their group project.
